Heights of Presidents of the United States

A record of the heights of the Presidents of the United States and presidential candidates is useful for evaluating what role, if any, height plays in presidential elections. Some observers have noted that the taller of the two major-party candidates tends to prevail, due to the public's apparent preference for taller candidates.

The tallest U.S. Presidents were Abraham Lincoln and Lyndon B. Johnson at 6 ft 4 in (193 cm), while the shortest was James Madison at 5 ft 4 in (163 cm).

Barack Obama, the current President, is 6 ft 1 in (185 cm), and Joe Biden, the current Vice-President, is 6 ft 0 in (183 cm).
Trends
The average height of the 43 men who have been President is 70.8 inches (180 cm). Over time there has been a slightly rising trend in this average, reflecting the increased height of the general U.S. population, although some of the tallest Presidents are from early United States history. The average height of male Americans nationwide in 2005 was 5 ft 9.2 in (69.2 in; 175.8 cm).
